alb3621571 Arab School. Artist: John Frederick Lewis (British, London 1805-1876 Walton-on-Thames). Dimensions: sheet: 11 11/16 x 19 1/8 in. (29.7 x 48.6 cm). Date: 1841-51.For most of the 1840s, Lewis lived in Egypt, where he famously adopted aspects of a pasha's dress and manner. Among the most accomplished of the Victorian "Orientalists," he is noted for his total mastery of the watercolor medium and his eye for rich detail. In this study for an exhibited work of the same title (Victoria and Albert Museum, London), Lewis captured the sleepy routine of a Cairo schoolroom, centered on a boy reading for a bearded teacher whose attention appears to be elsewhere. The drawing concentrates on the faces and turbans of the seated students and indicates the setting broadly, using the brown paper to suggest unadorned walls and floor and to provide a base for quickly brushed costume elements and the masterfully rendered wood grain of the teacher's desk. In contrast to Lewis's finished watercolors, with their elaborate detailing, this study demonstrates his rapid, informal use of the medium. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb9426705 Murillo Painting the Virgin in the Franciscan Convent at Seville, 1838, John Frederick Lewis R.A., British, 1805 - 1876, 21 1/2 x 29 3/4 in. (54.61 x 75.57 cm) (sheet)30 1/2 × 38 1/4 × 1 1/2 in. (77.47 × 97.16 × 3.81 cm) (outer frame), Watercolor, gouache, scratching out, and gum arabic over graphite, on card, England, 19th century, The British artist John Frederick Lewis painted some of the most sophisticated watercolors ever produced. This elaborate example was executed in Paris during the winter of 1838. A well-traveled artist, Lewis had closely studied the paintings of Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (16171682) during a visit to Spain in 1832. However, the curious composition of Murillo Painting the Virgin was almost certainly suggested by Horace Vernets Raphael at the Vatican, a work that aroused considerable interest at the 1833 Paris Salon and one Lewis surely examined. He may have intended his own painting as a tribute to the Spanish artist, a challenge to the Frenchman Vernet, or a topical response to the excitement caused in Paris in 1838 when the Galerie Espagnole opened in the Louvre. The representation of old masters at work had a long tradition, and the depiction of a Spanish master would have been timely in 1838.

alb3652400 Lewis Powell [alias Lewis Payne]. Artist: Alexander Gardner (American, Glasgow, Scotland 1821-1882 Washington, D.C.). Dimensions: 22.4 × 17.4 cm (8 13/16 × 6 7/8 in.). Date: April 27, 1865.At roughly the same time that John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln, Lewis Paine attempted unsuccessfully to murder Secretary of State William Seward. The son of a Baptist minister from Alabama, Paine (alias Wood, alias Hall, alias Powell) was one of at least five conspirators who planned with Booth the simultaneous assassinations of Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Seward. A tall, powerful man, Paine broke into the secretary's house, struck his son Frederick with the butt of his jammed pistol, brutally stabbed the bedridden politician, and then escaped after stabbing Seward's other son, Augustus.Four days later, Paine was caught in a sophisticated police dragnet and arrested at the H Street boarding house of fellow conspirator Mary Surratt. Detained aboard two iron-clad monitors docked together on the Potomac, Paine and seven other presumed conspirators were photographed by Alexander Gardner on April 27. Gardner made full-length, profile, and full-face portraits of each of the men, presaging the pictorial formula later adopted by law-enforcement photographers. Of the ten known photographs of Paine, six show him against a canvas awning on the monitor's deck, the others against the dented gun turret. In this portrait, Paine, towering more than a head above the deck officer, appears menacingly free of handcuffs. He was twenty years old. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
